Cornish Magic in Printmaking

Magical Printmaking in Cornwall

It’s taking me a while readjusting to Cambridge. Having spent time working in Newlyn and St Ives I realise just how creatively liberating Cornwall is for me – I think it must be something to do with my love of the sea as well as being in a community of so many incredibly varied artists.

My recent visit was primarily to work on my printmaking and, under the guidance of Naomi Frears at the Newlyn School of Art, I found myself working in an instinctive and immediate way that produced prints which, working on my own, I don’t think would have appeared quite so quickly – nothing like a deadline for focusing the muse!

This beautiful, brutal, rugged, peaceful part of the world never fails to weave a special magic into my work and I’m extremely pleased with what resulted in my latest visit.  A selection of these prints will be exhibited in my forthcoming solo show (details to follow soon)

Making Space for Something To Happen

Desperately waiting for something to happen!!!!

All of a sudden I've noticed that my studio is in need of a bit of tender loving care. I didn't realise just how messy it's become; I expect so much from it, it's time I gave it some love.

My studio is one of 17 in an artist co-operative, Cambridge Artworks . The other day I walked past one of my artistic colleagues doing some serious decluttering in her studio. It looked fab, and made her studio look huge. A big smile on her face she announced she'd been making space for something to happen. She totally inspired me, tripping into my studio today I realise that a good spring clean is in order......

Making space for something to happen? I hope so

Back from wonderous St Ives in Cornwall

I've had the most incredible time in St Ives, everytime I go there I come back artistically supercharged and find my creative sensibility forever changed.

Went down for a two day course with Naomi Frear at the St Ives School of Painting. Its a great venue and Naomi's course was focused, professional and totally inspirational - big thanks go to her.

I stayed the rest of the week on my own. Some people find that strange, maybe it is, but I love the sea and spent most evenings on the beach watching the sunset . Personally I value time on my own and find it invaluable for clearing out my head.

Since leaving the Royal Academy last year I've been unsettled with my painting style. I now have more time to paint and play and wanted to be looser and freer in my work but instead found myself buying smaller brushes and getting tighter.  This course opened the door I've been tapping at, and its great to feel my love of painting flood back.

Each morning I'm up and out and off to the studio, working on new work in a new way - putting paint on, rubbing it off, putting it on, scraping it back.....

Light improves my creativity

Amazing, as soon as the days get longer my creativity comes out of hibination. I feel like working again, I feel like getting out of bed and strolling purposefully to the studio. Phew, been waiting a while to feel like that again.

Been working on small acrylic paintings, and suddenly really wanted to do some printmaking. Have stared with a little perspex drypoint of Stag Starlight. Trick here is to draw it on the reverse of the plate then when you drypoint image on front of plate, it will be the right way round when it's printed (got to admit that this tip was from the Royal Academy's Print technician, Simon, a true magician)
So be interested to hear any tips on drypoint transfer that anyone else has

Happy Creativity

I love misty mornings

Nearly everyone who spoke to me moaned about the mist - but I love it - cos you get to see things like this when walking to the studio

If you look closely you can see Mrs Spider enjoying the mist too

Working on stags and dragonflies - but they're not ready to show themselves yet - whatch this space for further news.

Getting on with it

Getting on with it

Back from London, dropped off 3 crow prints at ArtCell for a Christmas Exhibition with the Stray Artists group and I'm now focused on getting on with some new work.

At times I feel like this........'can anybody hear me'

....and at other times I just know things are going in the right direction, when sitting by a pond and having Mr Dragonfly pop down in front on me in exactly the right pose.

Started on several paintings at once as want to get energy and freshness on the page and not get caught up in focusing too intently and getting caught up with being too precious.

Surprise 18th Century Dragonfly in UCL London

Surprise 18th Century Dragonfly in UCL London

Visited the Grant Museum of Zoology with my friends, Mi and Leah. Went to look for wings and ended up discovering a wonderous dragonfly caught around 1865.

Very beautiful, but very difficult to find as at the back of the display cabinet
No problem, staff happy to get it out for us. Sketches were a bit stiff to start off, but soon loosened up, especially when using ink and water pen/brush to create lovely loose washes and movement. Cant wait to work these up into some sloshy paintings.
